Grizzly kills couple in Alaska

CNN.com – Grizzly kills couple in Alaska – Jun 27, 2005:

The victims were in their tent when the attack occurred, according to Tim DeSpain, spokesman for Alaska State Troopers.

The campsite was clean, with food stored in bear-proof containers.

“The initial scene indicates that it was a predatory act by the bear, DeSpain said.

I don’t much like camping.  I don’t mess w/ nature; I try not to let it do the same to me.

Stories like this, and the two shark attacks in Florida in the past week re-affirm my belief.

INHD pwns.

As I sit here on the couch in the living room, I find myself watching INHD.  INHD is high definition cable channel that shows only HD content.

For those who don’t have an HDTV and HD service, I’ll let you in on a little secret — once you see HD content, you’ll never want to watch regular tv again.  The draw of HD is so powerful indeed, that I sit here watching a show about beavers.  Those that know me won’t be surprised, but here’s the thing — that’s not a pr0n title:  it’s a show about those little dam-building animals.

And I’m loving it.  Because it’s in HD.

The folks at INHD know this all too damn well, too.  Those bastards have me watching a show about beavers!

Me = pwned.

CNN.com – Flag Burning Ok?

One of the most useful features of Omniweb is that has persistent tabs, which is to say that all of the tabs that’re open when you quit the app will be re-opened for you when you re-launch it.  This feature comes in particularly handy for saving stories for reading at another, more convenient time.  The story below, about Congress passing a bill that’d allow the government to punish those who burn the US flag, is one of those.

All in all, I think the fact that congress is so concerned w/ stupid amendments like this is a HUGE waste of tax dollars, and wish they’d find something more meaningful to do.

Yes, it’s a symbol of what this country stands for, but the quote below sums up my feelings really, really well.

CNN.com – House approves flag-burning amendment – Jun 22, 2005:
But Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, said, “If the flag needs protection at all, it needs protection from members of Congress who value the symbol more than the freedoms that the flag represents.

Plasma

PlasmaWell, I finally managed to get a plasma tv.  :)

Truth be told, wifee did!  We got it a week ago today, but it was supposed to be a surprise for me for the Le Mans race weekend.  Since the store doesn’t actually keep any in stock, she had to settle for a delivery date of 2 days after the Le Mans.  Talk about an awesome surprise:  <3 wifee!

When it arrived on Monday, I spent some time getting the wall bracket mounted w/o the help of my stud-finder (no no…. don’t be silly:  I’m straight.  A stud-finder helps find the 2×4′s in the wall that are behind the sheetrock).  Turns out, I’m an idiot (wait:  I knew that, already):  I was using the stud-finder ALL WRONG.

When I was home Thursday, waiting for the cable guy to come hook up the HD cable box, I got a frantic call from work telling me that I needed to review some documentation (turns out, it was over 1 ream’s worth of documentation).  Since it was so much information, a good friend of mine brought it to me on his lunch break since it’d take too long to scan & email the doc.  When he got to the house, he showed me how to use the stupid stud-finder.  Anywho… it’s good that he did.

I spent a good deal of Saturday finishing the job, so-to-speak, and the end result is the nice shelving arrangement you see here.  Next up… mirror (shown on the left) and some other stuff for the kitchen!

CNN.com – No sign of trauma – Jun 15, 2005

CNN.com – Schiavo autopsy finds no sign of trauma – Jun 15, 2005:
Schiavo autopsy finds no sign of trauma

LARGO, Florida (AP) — An autopsy on Terri Schiavo backed her husband’s contention that she was in a persistent vegetative state, finding that she had massive and irreversible brain damage and was blind, the medical examiner’s office said Wednesday. It also found no evidence that she was strangled or otherwise abused.

So the question now is, when will everyone apologize to her husband?  He was accused of a lot of different things, and the autopsy has pretty much cleared him of everything.  I remember her parents saying some pretty rude things about him… and the government, too.

What are the chances of getting Dubya to apologize?

What’s worse is that I heard that her family is now disputing the results of the autopsy.

Ed Brill — Hannover Screenshots!

I’m SO excited about the upcoming release, but a little disappointed that we’ll have to wait AT LEAST another year or so before the betas are even available to download.

One of my biggest gripes has been the UI for the Notes client — putting things into perspective, that’s saying a great deal of what else Lotus have gotten right.
Activities

One of my first assignments at DISA, where I was stationed at the Defense Message System Program Office was to brief “The Generalâ€? on the differences between Notes and Outlook, from a user’s perspective.
Notes 6 App
As the resident “Notes Guyâ€?, I had access to some of Lotus’ engineers, and some of the feedback that I gave them seemed to honestly take them by surprise, as if they’d never even considered that they had a few *peculiarities* in the product.  The first example that comes to mind is that there was no “Deleteâ€? entry in the right-click menus — it said “Clearâ€?, instead.
Since then, Notes 5 and 6 have made some really nice headway on improving upon the old problems, but never had I expected something like *this*!

Great job, guys — and it’s about time!  :)

Sametime and Quickplace, Reloaded

Ed Brill:
June 14, 2005

Sametime and QuickPlace — they´re back!
First news of the day out of Hannover….my colleague Adam Gartenberg writes:

“With the 7.0 release of the products, we will be reverting to the Sametime and QuickPlace naming for our Domino instant messaging/Web conferencing and team space offerings. …
We hope our decision to revert back to the original names gives an indication both of the value we place in feedback from our customers and business partners, as well as to serve as an indication of the continued importance these offerings play in our portfolio of collaboration software.

Note, this is not the big news of the day.  Not when it had been, uh, mentioned elsewhere in the last few weeks anyway…

Hooray!  I’m so glad I never bothered to memorize IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Confere…. Collab….

….

…. Group hug!

Slashdot | Microsoft Found Guilty of Patent Infringement

Slashdot | Microsoft Found Guilty of Patent Infringement:
Microsoft Found Guilty of Patent Infringement

Posted by samzenpus on Wednesday June 08, @10:28PM
from the pay-up dept.
Spy der Mann writes “Microsoft has been found guilty of patent infringement and ordered to pay a Guatamalan inventor Carlos Armando Amado almost $9m in damages.  The US District Court of Central California court ruled that Microsoft had infringed on his intellectual property and ordered it to pay him $8.96m.  The patent in question is a method to transfer data between Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access using a single spreadsheet.

I really just don’t know what to say.  That’s sooo reprehensible.  Come on, guys…. you can do better than that.
