Baby Bells emulsify back into AT&T | Channel Register

I thought I was the only one that noticed what was going on w/ the announcement of SBC/AT&T re-merging.  How can this have been approved?  How can this make sense?

Baby Bells emulsify back into AT&T | Channel Register:
By Andrew Orlowski in Boston 27 Oct 2005 20:03

Competition, US-style
Back in January 1982, the US Department of Justice announced the dawn of a new era of competition. The national phone monopoly AT&T was to be broken up, creating seven Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) to compete alongside the phone veteran. It was the second anti-trust agreement in AT&T’s history.
The “Death Star” has inspired such loathing over the years that there are Americans who still refuse to have do anything with it. Although this is easier said than done.
The RBOCs have coalesced into two gigantic amalgamations of region monopolies – the twin duopolies of Verizon and SBC – which thanks to intensive lobbying at the Federal, state and city levels have succeeded in tipping the competitive landscape their way. They’ve also extended their reach into mobile voice – the leading two cellular carriers are SBC (Cingular) and Verizon – and fixed data. The future will be AT&T flavored too: the company is operating three trial WiMAX deployments and sees its relationship with the ILECs (Independent Local Exchange Carriers) as fertile ground.
The former state-owned monopolies in Europe inspire similar loathing, but regulators have been a little more successful in encouraging competition. The telcos t didn’t succeed in extending their fixed line monopolies into the age of mobile telephony, unlike Cingular and Verizon.
Now history has come full circle with SBC, which is at the approval stage of swallowing what was left of AT&T, renaming itself … AT&T. SBC today confirmed that the merged entity will use the AT&T brand, and will unveil a new logo and stock ticker when the process is complete by the end of the year.
The 1982 antirust case took seven and half years to reach a conclusion, and just twenty three years to unravel.
Well, wasn’t that worth it?

Wow… people are a never-ending source of amusement.  The guys did a GREAT job of having fun in the World of Warcraft in a way I’m sure the developers NEVER expected.

Pet Peeve — “as to”

From time to time, some of the idiotic sayings or phrases that make it into common lingo really irritate me.

The last thorn that got my goat was “at this time”.  As an example, I might see a news cast that’s asking about the bird flu epidemic, and the newscaster might say “There are no known human infections at this time.”  Simplifying this sentence, you could simply omit that obnoxious phrase and say “There are no known human infections.”  It’s implied that you mean RIGHT NOW, because you didn’t explicitly state a time frame; “There were no known human infections during the 1800′s.”  That new statement would tell the user that after the 1800′s, infections started showing up.

The latest phrase to chap my nuts is “as to”.  “As to” irritates me because it’s another of those fragments of speech that doesn’t really make sense if you deconstruct it, but people use it to try and make themselves sound intelligent.

Here’s an example:

CNN.com – Dozens subpoenaed in hospital deaths – Oct 26, 2005:
“First, you have the right to decide whether or not you wish to be interviewed. You can consent or decline. The decision as to whether or not you consent to be interviewed is yours alone,” Andrews said.

Couldn’t this be simplified to “The decision to consent to be interviewed is yours alone.”, or even more directly, “The decision to be interviewed is yours alone.”?

Footage of Tom Cruise Getting Squirted

This happened around the time of the War of the Worlds release, and I remember laughing quite a bit about it, but I have to side w/ Tom in this case:  I’d be pissed.

The crux of the story is that someone was faking an interview w/ him, complete w/ a camera to capture the shenanigans.  What they did, however, was use a fake microphone that was actually a squirt-gun.  They asked him a few legit questions to get him to drop his guard, and then squirted him.

At first, Cruise was somewhat of a good sport about it, but then he realized that he’d just been made a fool of, and handled it pretty well, I thought.  My second reaction, after laughing, was, “What if someone had squirted some bio-terrorist substance on him?”

In the end, it was just some young guys poking fun at Cruise during a time when he was truly acting strangely in the public eye (jumping on Oprah’s table, declaring his love, insulting Brooke Shields for using meds to get over her post-partem depression).  No permanent harm done, but someone posted the clip to YouTube, so I wanted thought I’d talk about it.

I don’t think I would’ve handled it as well, but my livelihood doesn’t rely upon the public’s opinion of me, so I’m impressed at how much self-control he showed.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time. Sorry, Kid

I haven’t posted a YouTube movie in a while, mostly because it’s full of people showing movies of their baby’s first _____, or “me being silly”, or copywritten material (movie clips, music videos).

I like this one because no-one gets (seriously) hurt, it’s not ill-intentioned, and it was completely by accident.

(Hint — watch the kid running at the bottom of the screen at the clip’s beginning)

CNN.com – Arrest warrant issued for DeLay – Oct 19, 2005

Absolut-Corruption-2Wow… I never actually expected this day to come, but it seems there IS justice in the world!

CNN.com – Arrest warrant issued for DeLay – Oct 19, 2005:
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas court issued a warrant Wednesday for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to appear for booking, where he is likely to face the fingerprinting and photo mug shot he had hoped to avoid.

Bail was initially set at $10,000 as a routine step before his first court appearance on conspiracy and money laundering charges. Travis County court officials said DeLay was ordered to appear at the Fort Bend County jail for booking.

Makes me wonder if he’ll use corporate money to post the bail… or even re-election funds …..

The charges against the Texas Republican stem from allegations that a DeLay-founded Texas political committee funneled corporate money into state GOP legislative races through the National Republican Party. Texas law prohibits use of corporate money to elect state candidates.

DeLay is charged with conspiracy to violate state election laws and money laundering, felony counts that triggered House Republican rules that forced him to step aside as majority leader.

Two separate indictments charge that DeLay and two political associates had the money distributed to state legislative candidates in a roundabout way — sending it from the political action committee in Texas to the Republican National Committee in Washington and finally back to candidates’ campaigns.

DeLay has denied wrongdoing.

Well, we all know that there are no guilty men in prison, so this doesn’t surprise me, either.  What’d be refreshing is for him to stand up and just take what’s coming to him.  Kind of how Clinton did.  Oh wait… nevermind, heh.

Where in the world is DeLay?

CNN.com – Sources: Tip on N.Y. subway threat a hoax – Oct 11, 2005:
From Kelli Arena
Tuesday, October 11, 2005; Posted: 1:32 p.m. EDT (17:32 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Information that led to heightened security for the New York City transit system was a hoax, government sources said Tuesday.

The sources said an informant in Iraq who provided the tip had told investigators about a terrorist plot involving New York’s subway system. That informant admitted he gave false information, the sources said.

I bet he was in Iraq.

This hoax was just what the doctor ordered to take some of the heat off of the president while he suffers from his lowest-ever approval ratings.

New Theme

I felt like trying a new theme, and I like it enough that I’m gonna spend some time customizing it in the days to come.

I’ve got a wedding to go to this weekend, so it won’t happen right away, but it’s such a nice theme that I thought I’d leave it up, even though it’s completely stock.

Here’s where I got it from.  :)

Edit: after switching from the ultra-clean Manji, I see I’ve got some cleaning up to do w/ links and such.
