Germans refuse to drink “king of beers” Budweiser at the World cup

Anheuser-Busch paid $40 million for “pouring rights” at 12 stadiums across Germany, something Germans and tourists have had trouble swallowing.

Well, can’t say I blame them, but a link from the article states:

Simply put, Germans hate Budweiser. Weeks before the inaugural games kicked off the Cup, Germans were furious at the prospect of having to drink what they refer to as “dishwater” at stadiums.

*shrug* It’s better than nothing, and I’ll drink Bud (regular bud, not lite.. ultra.. ultralite… liteultradooper..), but meh…. I can’t blame ‘em — they’ve got a reputation for having some of the best beer in the world.

Paid Character Transfer Coming Soon? – WOW Insider

Paid Character Transfer Coming Soon? – WOW Insider

Posted Jun 22nd 2006 4:30PM by Elizabeth Harper

While this may be pure rumor (and I can’t find a reliable source attribution anyhwere), there’s a fairly detailed character transfer FAQ floating around with all the information on pricing and availibity. If this is just a rumor, someone’s certainly gone to a lot of trouble to write it up with so much detail. Here are the highlights, though you’ll have to read the full document to get all the details:

  1. $25 per character transfered
  2. Transfers can take up to 10 days to process, during which time you cannot access the character
  3. Not all realms avalible for transfer (full or high population realms, realms soon to be open for free transfers, or recently released realms will not be avalible)
  4. Restrictions on how much gold a transfering character may have (300g for characters level 10 to 30, 1000g for characters level 31 to 50, 5000g for characters level 51 to 60)
  5. You may transfer from a PvP to a PvE rule-set, but not from PvE to PvP
  6. You may only transfer to a PvP realm if you do not have characters of the opposing faction on that realm
  7. You may transfer characters from one account to another only if you are the subscriber for both accounts

Guess my warrior has just been doomed to languish on a PVE server I no longer play on. T_T

Wired News: Test Tube Meat Nears Dinner Table

Wired News: Test Tube Meat Nears Dinner Table

What if the next burger you ate was created in a warm, nutrient-enriched soup swirling within a bioreactor?

Edible, lab-grown ground chuck that smells and tastes just like the real thing might take a place next to Quorn at supermarkets in just a few years, thanks to some determined meat researchers. Scientists routinely grow small quantities of muscle cells in petri dishes for experiments, but now for the first time a concentrated effort is under way to mass-produce meat in this manner.

You know, this kind of freaked me out at first, but when I think about it, this could go a long way to helping end starvation. As long as the food produced could be done more efficiently than raising an entire cow, this could actually be viable. When I think about how much land & feed a farmer needs to raise a cow, it doesn’t seem too far off. Let’s keep our fingers crossed :)

Yet Another Republican Criminal

Given who this guy’s ties were, this doesn’t much surprise me. He was taking kickbacks from Abramoff while leading the GSA; yes, the same Abramoff who was responsible for that criminal DeLay. I’ve included the entire article — click the link below to read it.

What stuns me is that this is the kind of person that fits right in w/ the current President’s staff members. I’m not even surprised to find out that this guy’s got ties to Abramoff and DeLay. This country’s become the punchline of many a bad joke.

CNN.com – Naked beau flushed from the bushes – Jun 15, 2006: “Naked beau flushed from the bushes

Thursday, June 15, 2006; Posted: 7:53 a.m. EDT (11:53 GMT)

ANN ARBOR, Michigan (AP) — A man who ran naked through his neighborhood to persuade his girlfriend to marry him got more than he bargained for when he was chased and shot at, police said.

The couple were discussing marriage early Wednesday when the woman said she wasn’t sure if she was ready, according to Ann Arbor police reports.

The man responded that taking risks is an important part of life and, to prove his point, jumped out of a first-floor window and ran naked across the street.

Before he could return, he spotted a couple walking and hid in some bushes to avoid them. A 28-year-old man noticed the bushes rustling and bare feet underneath, then drew a .40-caliber handgun and ordered the naked man out, police said.

The naked suitor ran away, but the armed man gave chase and threatened to shoot, police said. The gunman fired a shot and the naked man fell to the ground, suffering minor injuries.

A resident called police, who arrested the gunman on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon. He was released following further investigation, police Sgt. Patrick Hughes told The Associated Press.

The naked man was not arrested and didn’t want to pursue charges, Hughes said.

Ok, so the guy was tryin to prove a point, and probably has a bit of exhibitionist in him. He didn’t make the brightest decision in the world, but it certainly wasn’t the stupidest.

Mr. Gun-Toting-Evangelist, however, needs to have his nuts crushed in a vice, though. WTF gives him the right to shoot at an OBVIOUSLY unarmed man who’s fleeing? I’m all about protecting my wife (gunman was part of a couple — the assumption that he was w/ his wife is my own), but come on man: a naked man poses very little threat at the end of a .40-caliber handgun.

I wish there were more details on who this shooter is — I’m gonna guess he’s a right-wing fanatic.

DS Lite

I got my DS Lite this weekend :)

What a great piece of gear Nintendo has managed to put out. I’d already bought the New Super Mario Brothers game, so I knew I had that to look forward to, but when I got there, they had a special: buy two used games, get one free.

I picked up Nintendogs, Advance Wars and Mario Kart. Each one of them is a solid game, and fantastic fun. The variety is quite refreshing, and though they don’t all make use of the handheld’s unique capabilities, they’re fun!.

I’ve got a lot to do at work, so I won’t be able to get in as much time as I’d like, but I’m looking forward to getting to know these games in the near future.

WINE on OS XSo yeah, Apple’s dual-boot solution, BootCamp, is ok. Parallels Workstation is nicer. For me, I’d settle for the virtualized solution, but I’ve always hoped that the WINE project would get proper support on Intel-based Macs.

It seems this has finally happened, and the guys over at The Apple Blog have managed to get their hands on an alpha of the code being developed by CodeWeavers. From that they got to try, it’s still a little rough, but I have faith that it’ll be properly buffed up. Since this product is only a matter of convenience, my expectations aren’t for exact replication of all of a PC’s functionality, only that I’ll be able to run the oddball app that I don’t have in OS X from time-to-time. If they can get this going, I’ll have to consider getting myself a Macbook Pro.

DS Lite Reserved: w00t!

w00t!So Wifee & I were in Naptown over the weekend, and there was a Gamestop nearby. Having looked online for one, I found that all the retailers are pulling the “You have to get these other crap games I’m foisting upon you if you want this system” bullshit, which really chaps my nuts.

Out of curiousity, I thought I’d pop into the brick & mortar to see if they were pulling the same crap there, and surprisingly enough, they weren’t. On the way into the store, however, I spotted this license plate and had to grab a quick snap of it w/ my Treo. She & I looked at each other & knew immediately that it *had* to be an employee of Gamestop, though the close-proximity to a Circuit City meant it was possible that it was one of them, too. Either way, we both chuckled and went about our business, and I got my DS Lite reserved.

Sunday’s the big day, but I’m not done bitching about bundling. I totally get why retailers want to bundle games, as they markup on the console hardware is *very* slender, but it REALLY bothers me. The idea is that they assure themselves that they’ll get some software sales along w/ the console, and w/ an online store, consumers are given the freedom to pick their competitor w/o as much as having to get off their butts.

Having said that, as a long-time online consumer, I also know that if a site goes out of their way to make it really simple to get my software and the console all at the same time, on the same site, in the same shopping cart, I’ll do that, as long as the prices are right. Why bother going to another site, entering my password, navigating to the item I want and choosing my shipping options twice if I can do it all at the same time? If I ran a game store’s site, I’d have all of the choices right next to the hardware (most of them do this) in a pleasing, well-organized, uncluttered list. This way, you put all the choices right at the consumer’s fingertips. Using AJAX would even FURTHER the buying process by actually letting people drag & drop items into a graphical representation of their shopping cart!

In a physical store, however, the likelihood of people getting both hardware & software at the same time is very high, so it made perfect sense to me that the local one I went to wasn’t bundling, but that’s not always the case. In the case of the Xbox launch, you absolutely COULD NOT get a console at a store w/o getting the bundle. This was a systematic, organized push by Microsoft to force more titles at the same time of the console purchase. As a result, I waited it out. Screw that.

When the Xbox 360 launched, Microsoft went a little easier on the bundling, but the idea had taken root, and Best Buy reneged on their advertised offers that people had camped out overnight to take advantage of. The backlash came fast & frenzied, and they eventually had to apologize. They essentially pulled the most heinous bait & switch I’ve heard of in a LONG time. What further irritates me about this particular transgression against consumers is that Best Buy does this ALL THE TIME! I’ve gone in plenty of times to find that the advertised item in their flyer is already out of stock because they had “limited quantities”. Having spoken to former BB employees, they’ve told me that the quantities are sometimes as low as three actual units for sale. I don’t know about you, but that’s f’ing piss poor. If you’re a car dealer, three VINs makes sense: you’re not likely to sell all three by 1 hour after opening time. If you’re advertising a $200 hard drive, on the other hand, I call shenanigans!

So retailers: please, please, PLEASE, for the love of all that’s (un)holy…. PLEASE stop bundling consoles at launch. You can’t POSSIBLY hope to know what mix of games I’m going to want, so STOP FUCKING DOING IT.

MMO statistics show WoW wins – WOW Insider

MMO statistics show WoW wins – WOW Insider
Posted Jun 1st 2006 9:59AM by Jennie Lees

We’ve pointed to MMOGChart before, but the site’s latest update is worth commenting on. With subscriber numbers for all major MMOs through to May 2006, there’s one game that stands head and shoulders above the rest — no prizes for guessing which.

In fact, the pie chart above shows that over half (50.6%) of all MMO subscriptions are for World of Warcraft. The growth of WoW has been phenomenal, and it’s great to be part of its popularity. However, we all know that WoW isn’t without its problems, and it’s going to be hard for a challenger to come along and threaten WoW’s dominance.”

While the WoW statistics from chart above doesn’t come as a surprise to me, what i found really interesting was the fact that Lineage is still holding on SOLID to the #2 and #3 spots. Combined, Lin1 and Lin2 are 23%, which is nearly 1/2 of the WoW’s scraps. If the games were great, I’d just shrug my shoulders at the notion, but having played WoW for so long, there’s no WAY I’d go back to the grind of Lineage.

You must be new here: decend into Hades? [YES] [NO]

Windows Confirmation Hell

Somone posted this awesome series of screenshots in the #ignmac irc channel, and I can’t verify what version of Vista this is, or even if this is truly the sequence you’d get in this situation, but the sad truth is that it doesn’t immediately strike me as an impossiblity.

While I’m normally quick to point out that rumours and speculation are generally not worth the ether they’re written in, it’s this type of behaviour in current versions of Windows that really chaps my ass. I won’t waste too much time belaboring the point, as I’ve read a lot of rants on the same subject, but this is just another example of why I prefer OS X (and unix-based OS’ for that matter).

When you tell the computer to do something, it just does it. The assumption is that you know what you’re talking about, and that you’ll live w/ the repercussions of your actions. The end result is that you’re more efficient on that machine. Microsoft’s fallen victim to their market share by feeling they have to cater to the idiots out there and providing a ton of fail-safes. In that regard, the *other* operating systems that don’t act that way are truly for more experienced users.

What’s sad to me is that the majority of computer users don’t realize that they’re being patronized. Actually, let me rephrase that: most people are idiots. They probably don’t realize they’re being patronized by this ridiculous coding practice. Microsoft better get their shit together on Vista — there’s a great deal more negative press out there bashing Vista than there was for their other OS releases.
