Still Learning

Funny… years after having made my switch to OS X (I switched prior to the public beta of 10.0), I’m still experiencing those day-to-day moments where you encounter something new in the OS that makes you think, “Man…. those guys at Apple kick butt.”

Whoops!

I set the door alarm off at work today.

I was the first person to the office, & w/o thinking I used my key fob to unlock the door.  Instead of hearing the pleasant *beep beep beep* — I-acknowledge-you sound, I heard a somewhat troubling *beeeeeeeeeep beeeeeeee* — who-are-you-and-why-are-you-here? sound.

Since I’m new at the office, I don’t have the super-secret door unlocking code, so I did what every other quick-thinking man would do… I walked back out and sat in my car.  NO WAY am I gonna stick around for the cops to show up and issue me a beat-down.  At that time of the morning, they’ve got NOTHING better to do than harass clean-headed thug like me.

Luckily for me, I have my Pearl paired w/ this Powerbook, so I sat in the car and got online via Bluetooth for a bit while I waited for some co-workers to arrive.

News: Apple introduces ‘Complete My Album’ on iTunes

News: Apple introduces ‘Complete My Album’ on iTunes:
Apple on Thursday introduced a service on the iTunes Store called Complete My Album. The service allows users that have purchased individual songs on an album to purchase the full album at a reduced cost.

Ok, now THIS is cool.  I’ve always wanted this capability!

What’s really nice about it is that they create a link (I’m guessing — I haven’t looked at it, yet) to a page in the music store that lists all of your “incomplete” albums, where you can easily choose to finish them out.  This works GREAT for them, because it makes it ultra easy for me to drop some bucks on more music, but it also makes for a nice user experience.

Great job, Apple.  Thank you for taking care of this.

… and … damn you!

Best Buy Purchases Speakeasy :(

I just got an email from Speakeasy President & CEO, Bruce Chatterly.

What are details of the Best Buy and Speakeasy agreement?

Best Buy has agreed to acquire Speakeasy, a privately-held voice and data solutions company based in Seattle, WA. Speakeasy will be aligned under the Best Buy For Business unit. Speakeasy enhances the communications portfolio of Best Buy For Business with its voice and data services.

It is important to note that though Speakeasy will now be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Best Buy, we will continue to operate independently and the excellent service and support you expect will continue uninterrupted.

How will this change affect my service?

There will be no change or interruption to your existing service or level of customer support. All aspects of your service will continue to be managed by Speakeasy.

Well, let’s see if this is true.  I have to say, I’m a little disappointed.  Speakeasy have always been GREAT to me, and they’ve been one of the best companies I’ve ever worked with.

I know they say that nothing’s going to change, but that’s generally not the true, in my experience.

Don’t let me down, Speakeasy — you guys have been internet gods to me.

No Questions Asked Baby Chute

Maternity staff find big, drunk, smoking baby | Metro.co.uk:
Drunken German Heinrich Mueller, 28, has been arrested after climbing into one of the emergency post boxes for unwanted babies.

As Mueller slid down the chute he ended up in an emergency incubator, triggering alarms among medical staff that another unwanted baby had been deposited.

But instead of a newborn they found Mueller, who had started smoking a cigarette – then fell asleep as staff worked out how to get him out of the incubator at the hospital in Dortmund, Germany.

Hundreds of babies have been deposited in the boxes, set up across Germany and Austria, since the scheme started five years ago.

It came into effect after more and more young mothers, unable to cope with their newborns and afraid of dealing with officials, had been abandoning them on the street. The baby boxes offered a no-questions-asked alternative.

Ok, joking aside, that’s actually a damn good idea.  Not the drunken chute dive, but the fact that there’s a chute at all.

I like the idea of a child getting away from a parent who doesn’t want the child.  I’m a little curious to know what this chute looks like, but if a 28 year old man can fit down it.. what other shenanigans might a person be able to pull off?

We should have something like that here.

Dog Walking

As I walked the girls tonight, the first thing I noticed was that it was so amazingly warm for a March evening.  The girls had been away for a weekend w/ their mother, and this was the first time I’d really been out all weekend.

There’s a huge proposal due at work, and I’ve been working pretty hard to get it done in time.  I hate giving up my weekends.

Since I’d gotten home so late, I thought I’d take an extra long walk w/ the girls, so I walked a different route, and as I turned back to the west, I looked up in the sky and saw Orion, just like we’d seen so many nights before, and the sight brought a flood of memories back to me…

… and I wept.

Fibble.org: Use your BlackBerry Pearl as a Bluetooth Modem under OS X

Fibble.org: Use your BlackBerry Pearl as a Bluetooth Modem under OS X:
Posted by: grant on Wed, 13 September 2006 9:41 AM -08:00

1.  Download the script here. Please Right-Click and Choose ‘Save As’.

2.  Copy the script into /Library/Modem Scripts.

3.  If you’ve already paired your Pearl with your Mac, open Bluetooth Preferences, Select your Pearl from the list of devices and press ‘Configure…’.

(If you haven’t, choose ‘Set up Bluetooth Device’ – the following dialogs will be shown after you’ve paired your phone with your Mac. Make sure your Pearl doesn’t require a password for your mac to connect to it – the ‘Trusted Connection’ option for the pairing should be set to ‘Yes’ on your phone, not ‘Ask’.)

4.  Make sure ‘Access the Internet with your phone’s data connection’ is checked. Also, make sure ‘Use a direct, higher speed connection’ is selected.

Click Continue.

5.  In the Modem Script pulldown on the following screen, Select ‘BlackBerry 8100’. Use the following settings for the other fields, then click Continue:
Username, Password: leave blank
GPRS CID: *99***1#

6.  Open the Internet Connect application. Select the Bluetooth icon at the top. Under Phone Number, put your APN (for T-Mobile and the BlackBerry Unlimited plan, I use wap.voicestream.com, for Cingular it’s “wap.cingular”). Type a username and password (I use guest/guest, for Cingular you’ll use “WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM” as the username and “CINGULAR1” as the password) in the appropriate fields.

This is clearly pretty old technology, but I haven’t had to bother with it until recently, so I finally tried it and… WOW!  It’s awesome!

A couple of weeks ago, I did an oral presentation for a proposal, and one of the guys wanted to know if there was a way we could have email access from the office we were in, knowing there’d be no wifi.  I knew there was, but I didn’t have my powerbook at the time.  After realizing that my Airport Express wasn’t working, I realized that it was also a PITA not having wireless in my OWN HOUSE (my new Airport Extreme hadn’t yet arrived)!

So, within about 3 minutes, I followed the six steps on this page and it worked REALLY WELL!

\o/ technology!
