Conan O’Brien is officially The Man.

During the strike, he’s going to cover the salaries of 80 of his non-writing staff.

What I love about this is the fact that he’s letting the writers do their striking, but not letting the uninvolved people impacted by it to get effed by the striking writers.

Conan:  I’ve always loved your show, but …. good job on such a thoughtful gesture.

Conan O’Brien Paying 80 Staffers During Strike
November 29, 2007

As the Writers Guild of America strike drags on, Conan O’Brien is bringing some holiday cheer to his late-night talk show staff, pledging to cover the salaries of his non-writing production workers—nearly 80 people in all.

NBC, which airs the comedian’s talk show Late Night with Conan O’Brien, agreed to cover the salaries through the end of November, and O’Brien, 44, will personally pick up the tab for the foreseeable future, according to Variety.

O’Brien is said to be grateful for the loyalty many of those staffers have shown over the years. Many of them are expected to accompany him to the West Coast when he takes over as host of The Tonight Show in 2009.

Late Night with Conan O’Brien has been in reruns, along with the other late-night talk shows, since the WGA went on strike Nov. 5.

On Nov. 7, at a benefit in New York for wounded Iraq war veterans, O’Brien said, “I do have some good news about the writers’ strike. If it continues, there will not be a third Deuce Bigalow movie.” —Tim Nudd

Super Mario Galaxy highest rated game of all time – Joystiq

After a several solid hours w/ this game, I have no problem believing that it’s the highest rated game of all time.

Super Mario Galaxy highest rated game of all time – Joystiq:
Despite certain reviews that highlight the game’s flaws, Super Mario Galaxy is currently the highest rated game of all time on Game Rankings. The aeronautical plumber surpassed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by the skin of his pearly Italian teeth, with an average score of 97.8 percent from 30 reviews to Zelda’s 97.6 percent from 31 reviews.

The game balances difficult gameplay challenges w/ the gratification of short planet-based missions, and just brings so many smiles to my face. If you have a Wii and like Mario, you’re gonna love this.

Metareview: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (PS3) – Joystiq

Oh man. I have to have this game. This is one of the reasons I bought my PS3: it’s a true system seller.

Metareview: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (PS3) – Joystiq:
# IGN (91/100): “Here’s the thing about Uncharted, the final sum is far greater than the individual parts. Maybe you don’t dig the combat or maybe the pop-in gets you down, but the overall package of an endearing story, outstanding score, great performances and fun gameplay should put this title on the top of your holiday wishlist. Say what you will about the PS3, but Uncharted isn’t just a standout for Sony — it’s a standout for gaming as a whole.”
# Eurogamer (90/100): “By focusing on keeping things fun at all times, it might not be considered the most expansive or ambitious game out there. It doesn’t have a free-form openworld, but this is proof – if it were needed – that making a linear action game is nothing to be sneered at. By starting with a great control and camera system, building on that with excellent combat and a wonderful spin on Ico’s platform adventuring, and then topping it off with a decent storyline, Naughty Dog has cooked up one of the most relentlessly entertaining, fat-free games to emerge in ages. Topped off with the most stunning use of the PS3′s underused technical prowess yet, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is, for my money, the first must-have PlayStation 3 title.”
# GameTap (90/100): “This game is one of the most immersive gaming experiences I’ve had this year, and it’s definitely a great reason to own a PS3. The mix of platforming and gunplay worked really well and left me craving the next title in the series. Hear that, Naughty Dog? Get to work!”

Poker Night

So last weekend, I finally played a night of poker for the very first time ever.

I never understood the attraction of gambling at a casino, knowing that the odds are in favor of the house, but this was more a gathering of a tight group of friends than sharks. The thought of getting together w/ my close friends and laughing, drinking and talking about women was enough to motivate me, and I gladly prepped myself for the inevitable loss of my $20 buy-in.

After a ton of great food and lots of much-needed laughter, I had a moment of “Oh wow. I get it.” I was having a fantastic time, and only regretted that I was nearly out of chips when my luck turned and I was dealt a great hand.

A short while later, when I cashed out, I’d made my money back and actually ended up more than doubling my initial buy-in.

Man, it was good to laugh and talk so much.

Separation of Church and State, indeed.

Seriously — how can people like this continue to be elected into public office?

Well, I suppose that speaks volumes of the Georgian constituents, eh?

My Way News – Georgia Plans Service to Pray for Rain:
Georgia Plans Service to Pray for Rain

By SHANNON McCAFFREY

ATLANTA (AP) – What to do when the rain won’t come? If you’re Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, you pray.

The governor will host a prayer service next week to ask for relief from the drought gripping the Southeast.

“The only solution is rain, and the only place we get that is from a higher power,” Perdue spokesman Bert Brantley said on Wednesday.

Perdue’s office has sent out invitations to leaders from several faiths for the service, set for Tuesday.

Perdue has several times mentioned the need for prayer – along with water conservation – as the state’s drought crisis has worsened. Over the summer, he participated in day of prayer for agriculture at a gathering of the Georgia Farm Bureau in Macon, Ga.

Perdue, a Baptist, has enjoyed strong support from Georgia’s Christian conservatives.

The Southeast has been suffering from an intense drought in recent months that has threatened supplies of drinking water. Georgia has been locked in a battle with Alabama and Florida over how much water should be sent downstream from the state’s dwindling reservoirs.

Governors from the three states reached a temporary agreement after meeting with Bush administration officials in Washington.

The prayer service will be held outside the state Capitol on Tuesday. Unless, of course, it rains.

“Then we’ll move it inside, thankfully,” Brantley said.
