MSNBC Interactive – America’s healthiest restaurants
Interesting article.
I enjoy eating. I enjoy eating at restaurants. I try to watch what I eat. Eating in restaurants generally challenges my ability to eat something healthy. This story talks about some of the places that make that goal a tiny bit easier.
MSNBC Interactive – America’s healthiest restaurants:
Want to dine out without the calories in tow? Hit the town guilt-free with this listHealth magazine surveyed chain restaurants and found 10 surprisingly healthy standouts. Hit our top 10 for whole foods, good-for-you fats, even green vegetables on — gasp! — the children’s menu. Read on for the winners, great fast-food options, plus, how to eat out without gaining a pound.
Note: Health magazine judged all the restaurants on these criteria: healthy food preparation, whole grains on the menu, limited or no trans-fats in all dishes, low-sodium options, portion control, and how easily the customer can access nutritional information.
Ok — this makes sense. Let me point out some of the surprising places that made the list. Since I live in suburbia, I’m surrounded by restaurant chains who are generally pretty formulaic in their food prep, and focused on profit margins. The individual, privately-owned places that you find in cities have more freedom to try out new, possibly healthier, recipes. The risk of changing the menu in only one restaurant allows them this freedom. Larger, chain places have to systematically aim to be healthy.
P.F. Chang’s China Bistro
Healthy dining here comes in the form of whole-grain brown rice, sustainable Alaskan salmon, all-natural chicken, wok-based cooking (which requires less oil), and less sodium in the sauces. We love: Carb-free vegetarian lettuce wraps
I loooove P.F. Chang’s. Their food is fantastic. This is one of the places that has a very unique style to their food prep, and is packed w/ great flavor. I’m not surprised to find them on the list.
Noodles & Company
This restaurant combines 19 fresh vegetables with seven types of pastas in Asian, Mediterranean, or American entrees. We love: The Trio — soup, noodles, or salad paired with your favorite protein, plus a side salad or a cup of soup
Yet another not-so-surprising entry. Delicious, light and different, I always leave pleased.
Chipotle Mexican Grill
They use naturally raised, antibiotic-free meats, organic beans, and even hormone-free sour cream. The Corn tortillas give you a whole-grain option, and the tortilla-less Burrito Bowl lets you ramp up the protein and veggies. We love: Tacos with Black Beans and Chicken
Ok. This one is a standout. The portions at Chipotle are mind-blowingly large. My first time there, I got a burrito AND chips/salsa. The burrito must’ve weighed about 5lbs. Honestly. The tortilla alone has 17g of fat in it, though the article specifically talks about the tortilla-less option.
Lastly, six healthy eating tips (I guess the last one’s a freebie?).
5 healthy eating tips
Yes, truly. Steer clear of menu pitfalls with these tips from our experts Hope S. Warshaw and Cheryl Forberg.
Order it your way. You’re the customer, and most restaurants will do everything they can to keep you happy. So don’t be afraid to nicely ask to have that shrimp special grilled instead of fried.
Think tapas. Don’t feel compelled to order an entrée. You can put together a healthier meal out of two or three appetizers and side dishes.
Beware of the four Cs — crunchy, cheesy, crispy, and creamy. Those words are code for fat-dense foods.
Say bye-bye to bread. There’s no need to test your willpower. Take just one slice, then ask the waiter to remove that breadbasket from the table.
Undress your salad. Dilute your favorite salad dressing with a squeeze of lemon or a few drops of vinegar.
Get your doggy bag up front. Wrap up half before you dig in — out of sight, out of mind … and mouth.
Avoid the four C’s? I love the four C’s :’( (The doggy bag idea is great, though.)
MacNN | Gartner: Apple ordering massive 3G iPhone numbers
Hm.
MacNN | Gartner: Apple ordering massive 3G iPhone numbers:
Apple may have already lined up the production of millions of next-generation iPhones, according to a Gartner analyst. Ken Dulaney says that based on talk he has heard from Asian sources, he believes Apple has placed an order for 10 million updated iPhones, equipped with 3G broadband.
3G on it’s own isn’t enticing enough for me to drop the cash for a new iPhone. The killer app for me is Google Reader, by a LONG shot. It’s nice enough that reader’s a really competent RSS aggregator, but the real reason I use it so much is that it reformats the stories I choose to read in a very stripped-down, ad-free format.
None of the page’s banners (ads or otherwise) show up, no navigation buttons, no background images — just the text and any images included in the body of the story I’m reading. It’s amazingly well done, and w/ only one exception, works perfectly. When I’m reading on my phone, I’m generally away from my computer, sometimes out of wifi range, and never in front of a computer. What I need in those situations is to be able to digest information quickly, w/ little need for a fancy UI. Reader’s perfect for that.
Oh — and stripping out all of that data means that it’s performance over Edge is more than adequate. 3G? Well, I’d of course LIKE faster speeds, but for my use, Edge serves Google Reader up “fast enough”. I can’t justify the additional outlay of cash just for increased speed.
Dulaney speculates that the 3G iPhone may surmount battery concerns, expressed by the likes of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, by switching to an OLED (organic LED) display. This may not only result in less power consumption, but reduce the thickness of the phone even further.
Damn it. If this is true (better battery life, thinner, sexy OLED screen, increased speeds via 3G), I’ll have a much harder time resisting.
*sigh*
Creative Professionals are just fun
One of the incidental benefits of working at a creative company, compared to the government and government contracting places I used to work at is that everything they do is much more … well, creative.
In the past, the community outreach portions of the websites I used to webmaster were filled w/ stories of our company’s involvement in the Susan G Komen breast cancer awareness walks, or fund raisers for the Combined Federal Campaign. While those are both admirable causes, they left me feeling detached from them because of their grand scale. As a single person, it was difficult to feel the impact you were making.
At the company I’m at right now, we’re scheduled to clean up a local street near us that’s primarily full of local businesses and a sprinkling of residents. I drive on the road every day both to and from work, and seeing the trash removed will be a definite, visible improvement.
What’s remarkable about this is the manner in which the effort is being marketed, internally. There are some really nicely done flyers being distributed via email, and then there’s the image I’ve included in this post: a balled up piece of “trash” that is the printed out flyer.
Clever. Fun. Inspiring.
I love it.
(I will, regrettably, be at an event w/ five of my boys.)
Your development iPhone will self-destruct in: 4, 3, 2…. – iPhone Atlas
Ouch.
iPhone Atlas – iPhone guides, help, applications, news and more, updated daily.:
Posted 21 March 2008 @ 2pm in Development, NewsWith coders now being accepted into Apple’s iPhone Developer program and receiving the OS 1.2 beta software, we’re learning a lot — and it’s not all pretty.
As previously reported, Apple’s documentation states: “Once you install the pre-release iPhone OS on your device, such device may only be used for development and testing purposes until the final (GM) version of the iPhone OS is released.
[...]
Installing iPhone OS 1.2 also disables the phone’s radio, so you can’t make phone calls. That is, unless you unlocked your iPhone using an unofficial method prior to installation.
Well, while I have a hunch that this won’t always be the way of the iPhone development process, I’m a little bit worried about how long it’s going to take them to get it sorted out.
I’ve been waiting for an idea to hit me for an app that’d justify the $99 fee for application into the developer program. I’ve installed the free SDK, but the Jailbreak community has filled every conceivable hole in the software lineup that Apple’s left open, so I’m at a loss for inspiration. I may just write a simple app to get my feet wet and get used to the Cocoa Touch APIs.
I AM tripping BALLS.
I NEVER thought this would happen.
Wow. Thank you, Apple. I now have yet ANOTHER great reason to get myself a Drobo.

Gamespot Exodus: Say ‘adios’ to Brad Shoemaker – Joystiq
Remember back in February when I bitched that Gamespot was dead to me after Ryan Davis left? The last thing I said was:
Brad Shoemaker — when’s your two week notice? I know Ricardo’s gonna stick it out; he just got a fat pay raise as the new Head Mother Fucker In Charge. Who’s left? There are a few other guys who are entertaining, but man… that place is gutted now.
Guess what? (chicken butt)
Gamespot Exodus: Say ‘adios’ to Brad Shoemaker – Joystiq:
by Justin McElroy Mar 19th 2008 8:45AMWe’ve joked before that, with all of the resignations post Gerstmann-gate, Gamespot’s content must be generated by a lonely janitor in the offices, taking a break from picking gum out of the carpet. We’re sad to report that his life is about to be even harder: Editor Brad Shoemaker (who has written for the site for eight years) will leave the company this Friday. He hasn’t reveled [sic] where he’s headed, but he’s maintaining a personal blog to keep fans up-to-date.
The list of departures from the site is getting long enough that we’ll soon have to set it to the tune of the “William Tell Overture” to remember it all. But for right now it’s at Jason Ocampo, Ryan Davis, Alex Navarro, Frank Provo and, of course, Jeff Gerstmann himself. Just so we know, is this officially “fiasco” level yet? Are we at Code Fiasco?
Last guy standing is Justin Calvert, imo. I can’t think of anyone left that I give a shit about. Hit the lights on the way out, wouldja?
