Bad guys really do get the most girls – New Scientist

Um… duh?

Bad guys really do get the most girls – sex – 18 June 2008 – Print Article – New Scientist:
* 18 June 2008

NICE guys knew it, now two studies have confirmed it: bad boys get the most girls. The finding may help explain why a nasty suite of antisocial personality traits known as the “dark triad” persists in the human population, despite their potentially grave cultural costs.

Thu Jun 26, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET

UPDATE:We’ve received word from Fox Home Entertainment that despite any online retail reports, the Blu-ray of ‘Firefly’ has not yet been scheduled. Although the title is planned for release, official confirmation of a street date is pending. We’ve updated our database in the meantime, and will keep you posted.

Now, in an early announcement to retailers, the studio has scheduled a complete series set of ‘Firefly’ (the show ran for only one season) on Blu-ray for September 23.

(9.23.2008 must be the unconfirmed information)

An official press release is expected shortly, so we’ll certainly keep you posted as further word comes to us.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $89.95.

Doesn’t $90 seem like a lot?  I don’t buy TV shows, so I’m not sure, but…. wow.

(I’m still buying it)

Nintendo’s approach doesn’t look so bad now, does it, Sony?

$3.3 BILLION lost so far.  Wow.

PlayStation 3′s cost to Sony so far: $3.32 billion – Joystiq:
by Ludwig Kietzmann Jun 24th 2008 9:40AM

Having sold the system at price lower than the manufacturing cost, the PlayStation 3 was a $2.16 billion endeavor in 2007, with another $1.16 billion being lost in 2008.

The $3.32 billion investment, which includes the monolithic system’s complete development and introduction, “may not be fully recovered,” according to Sony. The manufacturer warned that should the PlayStation 3 fail to reach “favorable market penetration”, it would have a “significant negative impact” on the company’s profitability.

It’s pretty common in the console industry to sell the hardware at a loss (I believe Nintendo’s the exception), hoping to recoup your costs through software licensing fees and first party game sales.  $3.3 billion is a LOT of ground to make up, and Sony… you need to get your shit together, because there just aren’t enough PS3 exclusives to convince people to buy your system.

Check out my collection (not quite done documenting everything, yet):

Xbox 360:  28 games
PS3:  6 games
Wii:  7 games

My numbers are probably typical, but the fact that Nintendo makes money on their still-impossibly-hard-to-find-console makes all the difference.

I just can’t get excited about my PS3; even MGS4 doesn’t get me hyped.  I’m waiting for Little Big Planet, but that’s about it.  BluRay?  Oh yeah:  I got an AppleTV and spend most of my time watching the content in my iTunes library, instead of BluRay movies.

Excellent Rant by Adam Sessler

Adam makes a few great points about how irritating Xbox Live (XBL) is.

The focus of this rant is that the language on XBL is horrific.  It’s not just the normal trash talking that you might expect, but if you’ve been on XBL before, you know that it’s some of the most disrespectful racial and gay-bashing hate speech you’re likely to hear all year.

What’s strange about all of this is that it’s really just the culture of XBL, and most people likely don’t even think and behave this way with their friends.  Somehow the anonymity has conditioned people to one-up each other w/ their trash talking to this point, and now we’re stuck w/ this really vile crap-fest.

I honestly think it’s come down to gamers being left alone to play w/o someone else in the room to slap the taste out of their mouths at such utterances.

Personally, I just avoid online play, which is sad, really.
