Address Book Ownership

With a fledgling social network on the rise (Google+), it’s time I rant a little about a pet peeve of mine.

Many social networking sites offer the ability to import your contacts from one service into theirs. I know it’s convenient and saves you a lot of time, and helps them attract new users, but what about the privacy of the people you’re ingesting into the new social network?

Without any consent, I’ve seen my contact information freely given away to social networks so that my data can be mined and used to someone else’s financial gain. My contact information is MINE, given to my trusted friends. It’s not theirs to give away to third parties.

Developers — please do the right thing and stop doing this. It’s sleazy.

Dad Life

Nanna’s secret recipe; you know how I roll.  (Edit:  Thanks, John!)

Leo Laporte

When did Leo become so mean-spirited?

I’ve been noticing it more and more, lately. As he’s become more and more passive-aggressive about Steve Jobs not favoring him, he’s gotten more and more open about loving other tech. Tonight, listening to This Week in Google, he straight up mocked the creator of custom Android ROMs for being young.

Leo; seriously. Chill the eff out.

Edit:  I’ve softened some of my response, and another trend I’ve noticed is that Leo’s recent move away from Apple could be based on their increased popularity & his desire to stay edgy and counter-culture.

iOS4 backgrounding is actually useful

I was originally skeptical of Apple’s multi-tasking implementation in iOS4. The fact that apps were limited in their ability to stay alive was frustrating, except that there’s an option that allows devs to complete the last operation before the OS shuts it down.

Bylines, the RSS reader, will finish a sync. Now, even on Edge only, I can hit the refresh button then go do something else and let it finish it’s sync.

One of the most frustrating and battery killing things about iPhone OS < 4 was that I had to stare at my RSS reader/twitter client/web browser app while it was refreshing it’s content. Since I want that sort of refresh to be as fast as possible, I always used 3G to do it, which crushes batteries. Now that I have the option to do that in the background, I can let the phone do it over a leisurely, battery-sipping Edge connection.

Bravo, Apple. Bravo.

Rockettooth. Yeah. Srsly.

Ricky Martin finally comes out.

Ricky Martin Music:

I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.

Congrats, homes — I’m sure that’s a big relief.
