Separation of Church and State, indeed.

Seriously — how can people like this continue to be elected into public office?

Well, I suppose that speaks volumes of the Georgian constituents, eh?

Georgia Plans Service to Pray for Rain

ATLANTA (AP) – What to do when the rain won’t come? If you’re Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, you pray.

The governor will host a prayer service next week to ask for relief from the drought gripping the Southeast.

“The only solution is rain, and the only place we get that is from a higher power,” Perdue spokesman Bert Brantley said on Wednesday.

Perdue’s office has sent out invitations to leaders from several faiths for the service, set for Tuesday.

Perdue has several times mentioned the need for prayer – along with water conservation – as the state’s drought crisis has worsened. Over the summer, he participated in day of prayer for agriculture at a gathering of the Georgia Farm Bureau in Macon, Ga.

Perdue, a Baptist, has enjoyed strong support from Georgia’s Christian conservatives.

The Southeast has been suffering from an intense drought in recent months that has threatened supplies of drinking water. Georgia has been locked in a battle with Alabama and Florida over how much water should be sent downstream from the state’s dwindling reservoirs.

Governors from the three states reached a temporary agreement after meeting with Bush administration officials in Washington.

The prayer service will be held outside the state Capitol on Tuesday. Unless, of course, it rains.

“Then we’ll move it inside, thankfully,” Brantley said.

Mom blames Satan for burning baby in microwave | Chron.com – Houston Chronicle

Wow.  I’m not sure what to think about this.  These two people are clearly not right, but if they’re gonna pick something to blame for their craziness, I’d like to have seen them come up w/ something more original than religion.

The neighbor’s dog has already been used, but think of all of the great news we could’ve gotten out of this:

  • “The internet told me to do it.”
  • “Underpants gnomes made me do it.”
  • “DRM made me do it.”
  • “Watching American Idol drove me into doing it.”
  • “Open Source Software forced me… ”

Ah well.  Guess they’ve squandered their 15 minutes.  Dumbasses.

GALVESTON — A woman blames the devil and not her husband for severely burning their infant daughter after the 2-month-old was put in a microwave, a Houston television station reported.

Eva Marie Mauldin said Satan compelled her 19-year-old husband, Joshua Royce Mauldin, to microwave their daughter May 10 because the devil disapproved of Joshua’s efforts to become a preacher.

“Satan saw my husband as a threat. Satan attacked him because he saw (Joshua) as a threat,” Eva Mauldin told Houston television station KHOU-TV.

A Galveston County grand jury indicted Joshua Mauldin last week on child injury charges after hearing evidence that he placed his daughter in a motel microwave for 10 to 20 seconds.

The infant, Ana Marie, remains hospitalized. She suffered burns on the left side of her face and to her left hand, police said.

Eva Marie Mauldin, the girl’s 20-year-old mother, told the television station that her husband is “not the monster people are making him out to be.”

“That was not my husband; my husband is a wonderful father,” she said. “Satan was working through his weaknesses.”

Eva Maudlin described those weaknesses as an undisclosed mental disability, and that her efforts to get help for him have failed.

Police said Joshua Mauldin told them he put Ana Marie in the microwave because he was under stress. The family had arrived in Galveston the day before.

Eva Maudlin, who met her husband in an Arkansas church, denied those claims by police.

“He would never do anything to hurt her. He loves her,” she said. “When she cries he is the one who comforts her. When she is sick, he is the one that takes her to the doctor.”

Joshua Mauldin, of Warren, Ark., came to Galveston with his wife and mother because he was called to be a preacher, his wife said. While Joshua Mauldin’s mother has returned to Arkansas, Eva Mauldin remains in Galveston.

She is hoping to be reunited with her daughter, but Child Protective Services is working to have her and Joshua Mauldin’s parental rights severed. A custody hearing for the infant is scheduled for later this week in a Galveston district court.

Joshua Mauldin faces a charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily harm, which carries a possible prison term of five to 99 years, as well as a fine of up to $10,000.

Eva Mauldin has set up a MySpace page, “Joshua Mauldin is not a Monster,” in hopes of defending her husband and making pleas for people to help her.

DETROIT: Man with unloaded gun killed by victim

Hahahaha!

Pwn.

DETROIT: Man with unloaded gun killed by victim:
May 19, 2007
BY BEN SCHMITT and JACK KRESNAK

A robbery and crime spree aided by an unloaded gun came to a halt late Thursday when the gunman met more than his match: a gun with bullets.

Charles Parker Jr., 18, of Detroit was killed when a 53-year-old man pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot the teen, who was armed with an unloaded .22-caliber handgun.

Detroit police are calling it self-defense.

The botched carjacking on Grand River and Prevost came after a string of robberies in Detroit on Thursday, which police said were committed by Parker and four others, ranging in age from 16 to 20.

The robberies began about 8:40 p.m. Thursday at Kentucky and Curtis when a 16-year-old was robbed of his cell phone, a silver chain and his wallet, by at least two of the suspects, police said.

At 9:30 p.m., the robbers attempted to carjack a couple in the driveway of their home in the 19600 block of Appoline, police said. One pointed the unloaded gun at the couple and pulled the trigger.

The teens fled without the car.

Later, police said, the robbers saw a man at a Detroit car wash and tried to carjack him. The one approached with the unloaded gun and the other wielded a baseball bat, police said.

That’s when the man washing his car fired, striking Parker.

Parker’s alleged accomplices took him to Sinai-Grace Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Hospital security officers detained the other youths until police arrived. Police spokesman James Tate said a 17-year-old Detroit female, 16-year-old Southfield boy, a 19-year-old Southfield man, and a 20-year-old Detroit man are in custody.

They face arraignment on armed robbery charges today in Detroit’s 36th District Court.

After the shooting, police questioned the 53-year-old man and released him, noting that he had a valid concealed weapons permit.

Then they gave him back his gun.

US Army Discrimination

I’m not surprised that the Army’s full of opinionated, religious men in high positions.

What surprises me is that an Army officer would resign his commission to prove such a trivial a point.

While I agree with him and think that there’s definite bias against atheists & agnostics in the senior leadership roles, the occasion that brought about this discussion was not a big deal. Some Army general said that there are no atheists in foxholes — a phrase that’s meant to relate the very serious possibility of death when you’re at war and simultaneously discredit the resolve of atheists.

What happened next? The lieutenant submitted a formal Equal Opportunities (EO) complaint against this general for having said this.

For starters: you’re a very junior officer tying up the schedules of a lot of senior officers over something really stupid. You HAVE to expect that they’re not going to appreciate your being so inconsiderate. This wasn’t a life or death situation. There wasn’t a great injustice. There’s really not a lot to be gained by doing this, apart from making a name for yourself, or just being a pain in the ass. There’s more to this story than the lieutenant’s letting on — he had an axe to grind.

Next: the Army’s response is completely ridiculous. They wasted MY FUCKING TAX DOLLARS to tell all of their EO trainers that it’s okay to discriminate against atheists since atheism’s not a religion.

As a former military officer, I know that atheists aren’t singled out and actively discriminated against. I’ve never seen anyone FORCED to go to worship services. I’ve experienced a great deal of religious tolerance in the military.

If this asshole had left well enough alone, things would’ve been fine the way they were.

Sheep dogs. Fer reals. Sorta.

Sheepdog

Edit: Snopes posted a story yesterday refuting this story. :( So… looks like it’s not true.

Ok, so it’s not a sheepdog, it’s a lamb. YA RLY.

I gotta be honest: I’m a dog person, and I’m not sure I’ve ever looked very closely at full-sized poodles enough to know what their face should look like, or what types of bodies they should have. If you gave one a bitchin’ poodle-cut, I doubt very seriously that I’d even know the difference.

Then again, if I bought a lampoodle, I’d probably know a thing about poodles and might be a little more discriminating.

Dog owners ‘fleeced’ in poodle scam
Thursday, April 26, 2007

Is it a lamb? Is it a poodle? Can you spot the difference?

Thousands of people have been ‘fleeced’ into buying neatly coiffured lambs they thought were poodles.

Entire flocks of lambs were shipped over from the UK and Australia to Japan by an internet company and marketed as the latest ‘must have’ accessory.

But the scam was only spotted after a leading Japanese actress said her ‘poodle’ didn’t bark and refused to eat dog food.

Maiko Kawakami, who starred in the Japanese thriller Violent Cop, showed photographs of her pet on a television talk show only to be told it wasn’t a dog – but was in fact a lamb.

The discovery prompted hundreds of women to contact the police with similar problems and the authorities believe as many as 2,000 people have been conned.

‘We launched an investigation after we were made aware that a company was selling sheep as poodles,’ a police spokesman told The Sun.

‘Sadly, we think there is more than one company operating in this way.

‘The sheep are believed to have been imported from overseas – Britain and Australia.’

Poodles are famously used by the rich and glamourous on the continent but are extremely rare in Japan, with many people having little idea what they look like.

The company, which translates as Poodles as Pets, sold the ‘poodles’ for £630, about half the cost of a normal poodle but is now understood to have been shut down.

Name Calling

By now, most people have heard about the radio talk show host who got himself in trouble for using some racially-charged words to describe a woman’s basketball team.  I’ll avoid using his name — I don’t think he deserves any more press.

As i watched some of the coverage on this morning’s news shows, the discussion focused on the double standard of why blacks* can use the “n-word”, while whites can’t.  Out of a panel of news hosts, prominent black activists and representatives of the offended basketball team, everyone agreed that it existed, but no-one seemed to be able to crystalize why.  Let me help you guys out.

White slave owners used it as a term of horrific racial hatred and intolerance.

It was used for so long that it became part of the black-american vernacular.  Used among peers, there’s no chance that one black guy is using it in the same context as the white slave owners of days past.

Why’s this so hard to understand?  White people — you can’t use it.  Get over it.  The fact that blacks use it doesn’t make it okay for you to use it.

You may not have been a slave owner, but you are automatically lumped in w/ the idiots that share your skin color.

Isn’t the irony delicious?

* Note:  I use the term “blacks” since “African American” is inaccurate.  Not all Africans are black, and not all black Americans are African.

Bush’s New Tack Steers Clear of ‘Stay the Course’

President Bush and his aides are annoyed that people keep misinterpreting his Iraq policy as “stay the course.” A complete distortion, they say. “That is not a stay-the-course policy,” White House press secretary Tony Snow declared yesterday.

Where would anyone have gotten that idea? Well, maybe from Bush.

“What you have is not ‘stay the course’ but in fact a study in constant motion,” White House press secretary Tony Snow said yesterday. (By Ron Edmonds — Associated Press)
“We will stay the course. We will help this young Iraqi democracy succeed,” he said in Salt Lake City in August.

“We will win in Iraq so long as we stay the course,” he said in Milwaukee in July.

“I saw people wondering whether the United States would have the nerve to stay the course and help them succeed,” he said after returning from Baghdad in June.

*sigh*

What bothers me most is their arrogance in believing that we’d just f’ing FORGET that they’ve been using “Stay the course” as their slogan for YEARS.

I absolutely respect someone’s ability to re-evaluate a situation and change their mind and ‘fess up that it’s time for a change.

LYING about it…. despicable and cowardly.

What a jip.

G4 folding into E! Management

This shouldn’t surprise anyone, but what started as a pretty innocent-sounding announcement, ends as the writing on the wall.

G4 Folds Into E! Tent
By James Hibberd
Comcast is consolidating its West Coast entertainment networks, bringing G4 management under the E! Networks tent.

E! and Style chief Ted Harbert has been given the newly created title of CEO, Comcast Entertainment Group. He will continue to report to Comcast Programming Group President Jeff Shell. G4 President Neal Tiles, who joined the network in September 2005, will now report to Mr. Harbert.

G4′s executive staff will move into E!’s Los Angeles offices. Sources said layoffs among the G4 staff are likely, though Mr. Harbert said it’s too soon to tell.

“When there is consolidation, if we find there’s overlap in administrative and support positions, we’ll have tough calls to make,” he said. “But we haven’t looked at that yet.”

Mr. Harbert said he has not yet decided whether G4′s Santa Monica production facilities will move as well. “They’re shooting shows in very expensive space, but we’re already maxed out at this building,” he said. “I don’t know what the answer is, but nothing will happen for a while.”

Mr. Harbert’s duties for E! and Style will not change. As for G4, Mr. Harbert said he will weigh in on programming decisions but emphasized that Mr. Tiles will continue to run the network.

“I believe that when somebody has a title that says they run the operation, they should run the operation,” he said. “My main job is to fight to get him resources [from Comcast] for programming and marketing. They don’t have nearly enough of a marketing budget.”

Since Comcast launched G4 in 2002, the network has had a difficult time gaining traction. Its video game brand attracts demographically desirable young male viewers, but too few of them. During the third quarter, G4 was ranked 57th out of 64 basic cable networks.

In the past year, the channel has tried to expand its brand to a general-interest young men’s network with acquisitions including “Star Trek” and “Arrested Development.”

“I do agree with the vision of going after young men more than just going after gaming,” Mr. Harbert said. “Gaming has been demonstrated as being too narrow.”

Mother …. *sigh* Well, that’s that. Guess we had a good run. I was wondering what was going on w/ X-Play lately w/ Morgan being gone from the show so much, but I’m guessing she’s out lookin for work. :/

North Korea Clinton’s Fault???

The Gadflyer: Fly Trap
All-Purpose Answer…
Paul Waldman (9:24AM) link

To any conservative attempting to argue that the fact that North Korea now appears to have tested a nuclear weapon must be Bill Clinton’s fault:

“George W. Bush has been president for six years. Can you tell me what his administration has done during that time to prevent North Korea from getting nuclear weapons?”

This will be followed by dead silence. Because of course, they haven’t actually done anything. There has been no North Korea policy. And we’re supposed to be shocked that it has come to this?

*sigh* I remember bitching about this at election time.
