North Korea Clinton’s Fault???

The Gadflyer: Fly Trap
All-Purpose Answer…
Paul Waldman (9:24AM) link

To any conservative attempting to argue that the fact that North Korea now appears to have tested a nuclear weapon must be Bill Clinton’s fault:

“George W. Bush has been president for six years. Can you tell me what his administration has done during that time to prevent North Korea from getting nuclear weapons?”

This will be followed by dead silence. Because of course, they haven’t actually done anything. There has been no North Korea policy. And we’re supposed to be shocked that it has come to this?

*sigh* I remember bitching about this at election time.

Evangelist drowns trying to walk on water
Pastor reportedly told congregation he could repeat miracle of Jesus

An evangelist who tried replicating Jesus’ miracle of walking on water has reportedly drowned off the western coast of Africa.

Pastor Franck Kabele, 35, told his congregation he could repeat the biblical miracle, and he attempted it from a beach in Gabon’s capital of Libreville.

“He told churchgoers he’d had a revelation that if he had enough faith, he could walk on water like Jesus,” an eyewitness told the Glasgow Daily Record.

“He took his congregation to the beach saying he would walk across the Komo estuary, which takes 20 minutes by boat. He walked into the water, which soon passed over his head and he never came back.”

Ok, I literally laughed when I read this.

At what point do you think he lifted his hand up to the sky surface of the water and said, “God…. help a brotha out, here?”

Unable to unplug, tech addicts may sue, researcher says

Could gadgets like BlackBerries and cell phones ring up lawsuits?
Wojtek Dabrowski

August 25, 2006 (Reuters) — Keeping employees on electronic leashes such as laptops, BlackBerries and other devices that allow them to be constantly connected to the office could soon lead to lawsuits by those who grow addicted to the technology, a U.S. academic warns.

In a follow-up to an earlier paper on employees’ tech addictions, Gayle Porter, associate professor of management at the Rutgers University School of Business in Camden, N.J., has written a paper that states that workers whose personal lives suffer as a result of tech addictions could turn their sights on their employers.

While I can certainly relate, I think the point that the article makes about people not being able to draw the line between work & home is very important. The author states that people’s lives turn to crap, and they look for someone to blame (typical).

One thing that serving in the military taught me is how to keep things in perspective. The first year I was married, I spent 54 days at home. That sucked ass. I knew then that I was in the wrong job, and that I was going to have to do something about it. There were plenty of officers that’d come before me, and there were certainly going to be tons of them proceeding; keeping that in mind let me realize that the military would survive just fine w/o me.

I’ve carried that same mentality with me into Corporate America, too. When it’s time to be home, people have learned that I’m pretty much not to be bothered. My time is my time. There are occasional exceptions, and I have no problem w/ that, but I’ve seen far too many co-workers spend all of their free time on the job.

Is it too much to ask that they simply encrypt the contents of the hard drive? I don’t consider myself much of a security expert, but I KNOW this technology’s existed for at LEAST five years. What the fuck, guys? Vets risked their lives for you — do the right damn thing and pay attention to what you’re doing.

CNN.com – Naked beau flushed from the bushes – Jun 15, 2006: “Naked beau flushed from the bushes

Thursday, June 15, 2006; Posted: 7:53 a.m. EDT (11:53 GMT)

ANN ARBOR, Michigan (AP) — A man who ran naked through his neighborhood to persuade his girlfriend to marry him got more than he bargained for when he was chased and shot at, police said.

The couple were discussing marriage early Wednesday when the woman said she wasn’t sure if she was ready, according to Ann Arbor police reports.

The man responded that taking risks is an important part of life and, to prove his point, jumped out of a first-floor window and ran naked across the street.

Before he could return, he spotted a couple walking and hid in some bushes to avoid them. A 28-year-old man noticed the bushes rustling and bare feet underneath, then drew a .40-caliber handgun and ordered the naked man out, police said.

The naked suitor ran away, but the armed man gave chase and threatened to shoot, police said. The gunman fired a shot and the naked man fell to the ground, suffering minor injuries.

A resident called police, who arrested the gunman on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon. He was released following further investigation, police Sgt. Patrick Hughes told The Associated Press.

The naked man was not arrested and didn’t want to pursue charges, Hughes said.

Ok, so the guy was tryin to prove a point, and probably has a bit of exhibitionist in him. He didn’t make the brightest decision in the world, but it certainly wasn’t the stupidest.

Mr. Gun-Toting-Evangelist, however, needs to have his nuts crushed in a vice, though. WTF gives him the right to shoot at an OBVIOUSLY unarmed man who’s fleeing? I’m all about protecting my wife (gunman was part of a couple — the assumption that he was w/ his wife is my own), but come on man: a naked man poses very little threat at the end of a .40-caliber handgun.

I wish there were more details on who this shooter is — I’m gonna guess he’s a right-wing fanatic.

You must be new here: decend into Hades? [YES] [NO]

Windows Confirmation Hell

Somone posted this awesome series of screenshots in the #ignmac irc channel, and I can’t verify what version of Vista this is, or even if this is truly the sequence you’d get in this situation, but the sad truth is that it doesn’t immediately strike me as an impossiblity.

While I’m normally quick to point out that rumours and speculation are generally not worth the ether they’re written in, it’s this type of behaviour in current versions of Windows that really chaps my ass. I won’t waste too much time belaboring the point, as I’ve read a lot of rants on the same subject, but this is just another example of why I prefer OS X (and unix-based OS’ for that matter).

When you tell the computer to do something, it just does it. The assumption is that you know what you’re talking about, and that you’ll live w/ the repercussions of your actions. The end result is that you’re more efficient on that machine. Microsoft’s fallen victim to their market share by feeling they have to cater to the idiots out there and providing a ton of fail-safes. In that regard, the *other* operating systems that don’t act that way are truly for more experienced users.

What’s sad to me is that the majority of computer users don’t realize that they’re being patronized. Actually, let me rephrase that: most people are idiots. They probably don’t realize they’re being patronized by this ridiculous coding practice. Microsoft better get their shit together on Vista — there’s a great deal more negative press out there bashing Vista than there was for their other OS releases.

One of Those Days

Today kind of sucked.

I was out of the office for most of the day yesterday, trying to do something nice by donating my old motorcycle to the Apache Foundation, and to be certain they KNEW they were coming to pickup a bike, I mentioned it at least twice on the form, and once on the phone, Saturday. Somehow, “Honda CBR600″ got translated into “Honda Accord”.

Truck-driver-guy showed up w/ NOTHING to tie the bike down.

So today I get to work and all kinds of things (read: systems/servers) decided they wanted to take some time off, too. After some fancy footwork, the guys got the machines back in order (great jeorb!) and things were fine.

4 o’clock rolled around, and I wanted to get a big ole glass of water. Since the cleaning crew was vacuuming today, I scheduled my trip to the cooler at “bacoom” time. Glass full, I was ready to wrap up for the night and head on home (I’m an early person). Luckily for me, cleaning woman knocked the plug out of my G5 and now it won’t boot.

Oh, joy.

morons.org – Anti-Gay Preacher Arrested for Soliciting Sex from Male Undercover Cop:

Southern Baptist Convention executive committee member and South Tulsa Baptist Church senior pastor Lonnie Latham has spoken out on several occasions against homosexuals and against gay marriage. But perhaps the lady doth protest too much.
Latham was arrested by Oklahoma City police after asking an undercover officer posing as a male prostitute to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. He was booked into an Oklahoma County jail and released on $500 bail. His 2005 Mercedes was impounded.

KOCO reports that the arrest took place in the parking lot of the Habana Inn, where locals have complained about male prostitutes flagging down cars.

Latham claims he was “set up” and was merely “pastoring to police.” It just happens his way of “pastoring to police” involved asking for oral sex in an area known for its male prostitutes. Unconventional, to say the least.

I love it.

High & mighty, indeed.

On a side note, I’ll be updating on what I’ve been up to for the past month or so in a forthcoming post.

Live Sade Performance

Wow.

I’ve been a big fan of Sade for quite some time, but I’ve never caught a live show, and haven’t ever even seen her perform on TV. When I ran across this performance on youtube, I had to watch it.

Having never seen her perform live, I somehow haven’t ever thought about what it was I was missing. Her style’s smooth and sensual; appropriate for her music. If you’re not a big fan, you’ll probably find this a bit mellow, but it’s a really decent song and sounds amazing as a live performance.

Bush Lied. Anyone actually surprised?

Right, so I read this today, and I’ll quote the full article, as the author I read has done.

The Gadflyer: Fly Trap:
OK, Maybe We Did Lie
Paul Waldman (9:14AM)

The line from the Bush administration and their allies about the claims they made before the war has been, hey, maybe we were wrong, but it was an honest mistake. It’s not like we knew Iraq didn’t have weapons of mass destruction. It’s not like we knew there were no ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda. We just told the public what we thought.

Although most clear-thinking people see this line for the load of hooey it is, there are only a few pieces of definitive evidence to which one can point that actually prove what the administration knew for sure and didn’t know. I’m talking not about clear omissions or obvious exaggerations, but the smoking gun, if you will. Well now the incomparable Murray Waas gives us such a smoking gun in the National Journal. I’ll quote the article at length:

Key Bush Intelligence Briefing Kept From Hill Panel
By Murray Waas, special to National Journal
© National Journal Group Inc.
Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005

Ten days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President Bush was told in a highly classified briefing that the U.S. intelligence community had no evidence linking the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein to the attacks and that there was scant credible evidence that Iraq had any significant collaborative ties with Al Qaeda, according to government records and current and former officials with firsthand knowledge of the matter.

The information was provided to Bush on September 21, 2001 during the “President’s Daily Brief,” a 30- to 45-minute early-morning national security briefing. Information for PDBs has routinely been derived from electronic intercepts, human agents, and reports from foreign intelligence services, as well as more mundane sources such as news reports and public statements by foreign leaders.

One of the more intriguing things that Bush was told during the briefing was that the few credible reports of contacts between Iraq and Al Qaeda involved attempts by Saddam Hussein to monitor the terrorist group. Saddam viewed Al Qaeda as well as other theocratic radical Islamist organizations as a potential threat to his secular regime. At one point, analysts believed, Saddam considered infiltrating the ranks of Al Qaeda with Iraqi nationals or even Iraqi intelligence operatives to learn more about its inner workings, according to records and sources.

The September 21, 2001, briefing was prepared at the request of the president, who was eager in the days following the terrorist attacks to learn all that he could about any possible connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda…

The highly classified CIA assessment was distributed to President Bush, Vice President Cheney, the president’s national security adviser and deputy national security adviser, the secretaries and undersecretaries of State and Defense, and various other senior Bush administration policy makers, according to government records.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has asked the White House for the CIA assessment, the PDB of September 21, 2001, and dozens of other PDBs as part of the committee’s ongoing investigation into whether the Bush administration misrepresented intelligence information in the run-up to war with Iraq. The Bush administration has refused to turn over these documents.

Indeed, the existence of the September 21 PDB was not disclosed to the Intelligence Committee until the summer of 2004, according to congressional sources. Both Republicans and Democrats requested then that it be turned over. The administration has refused to provide it, even on a classified basis, and won’t say anything more about it other than to acknowledge that it exists….

But a comparison of public statements by the president, the vice president, and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld show that in the days just before a congressional vote authorizing war, they professed to have been given information from U.S. intelligence assessments showing evidence of an Iraq-Al Qaeda link.

“You can’t distinguish between Al Qaeda and Saddam when you talk about the war on terror,” President Bush said on September 25, 2002.

The next day, Rumsfeld said, “We have what we consider to be credible evidence that Al Qaeda leaders have sought contacts with Iraq who could help them acquire … weapons-of-mass-destruction capabilities.”

The most explosive of allegations came from Cheney, who said that September 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta, the pilot of the first plane to crash into the World Trade Center, had met in Prague, in the Czech Republic, with a senior Iraqi intelligence agent, Ahmed Khalil Ibrahim Samir al-Ani, five months before the attacks. On December 9, 2001, Cheney said on NBC’s Meet the Press: “[I]t’s pretty well confirmed that [Atta] did go to Prague and he did meet with a senior official of the Iraqi intelligence service in [the Czech Republic] last April, several months before the attack.”

Cheney continued to make the charge, even after he was briefed, according to government records and officials, that both the CIA and the FBI discounted the possibility of such a meeting.

So the intelligence sure wasn’t wrong on this point. The intelligence was absolutely right. Bush and Cheney simply chose to lie to the public because the intelligence didn’t give them the answer they wanted.
