Good googely moogely.
$500m in the first week. 3.6m sold on day one and 6m to date. Wow.
It’s really good, though — if you haven’t played it, give it a shot. I wasn’t a fan of it in the past, but this one’s different in some important ways. I won’t go into details, since there are some really in-depth reviews on every major gaming site, but wow… <3
NY Times: GTA IV snatches $500 million in first week – Joystiq:
by Ludwig Kietzmann
May 7th 2008 6:30AMAt last! The miserable, sleepless nights we’ve had to endure since Grand Theft Auto IV’s launch will come to an end, with the New York Times thoughtfully informing us just how much money a gigantic corporation has earned from the release of one of the year’s most anticipated games. That would be 500 million dollars in the first week, just so you know.
Other statistics expected to escape from Take-Two’s maw later today (Update: The figures have now been officially announced by Take-Two) point to the open-ended carjack caper having sold 6 million copies so far — 3.6 million on the first day.

Wow. I heard about this on the radio this morning. Yes, the game is violent. Yes, the game is dirty. No, the game should not be played by children. So why did it sell so well? The question can be answered in many, many ways. Still, though, apart from any sociolgical analysis as to why we love sex and violence so much as a population, the game is JUST THAT GOOD. I am not normally an RPG guy, as you know. But this one, with it’s clever and entertaining writing, the numerous fun missions you can accomplish, and the freedom the player is given within the game, got me hooked.
I generally think that the sheeple in this country are, as a group, morons. Just look at American Idol!! GTA IV, however, is so well put together that I truly believe that the high sales are well-deserved. There is true talent in the team that created the game and they deserve the credit much more so than some toehead who can barely sing but looks good on stage and wins over audiences with mediocrity.

Part of me cringes that I’m lumping myself in w/ the 6m other people who’ve bought it, but it’s really a standout product worthy of the praise that’s been heaped on it. The ultra-violence is a lot more realistic this time than in past GTA games, but it’s never been aimed at children, so I’m ok w/ that.
I had a discussion about it recently and had to point out to the opposing party that it’s no different than having a dvd of Saw in your house — you wouldn’t let your child watch it, so why would you let them play GTA? Once people lose the pre-conceived notion that games are meant for children, the steam is let right out of their argument and you can see them deflate.
