TUCSON, July 13 — To anyone who ever said, “I wouldn’t vote for that bum for a million bucks,� Arizona may be calling your bluff.A proposal to award $1 million in every general election to one lucky resident, chosen by lottery, simply for voting — no matter for whom — has qualified for the November ballot.

Well, you have to vote here in Australia. Or at least turn up to a polling station and have your name crossed off. But if you go to all that effort, why not just vote anyway.
a quick bit of reaserch suggests a penalty is only a $20 fine for not voting, so it seems not that big a penalty is in place, anyway.

Nifty idea… $1m seems a little high though! Ten prizes at $100000, or some other breakdown, would cost the same and seems like it would be way more effective at drawing people in – one single chance out of an entire state is awfully slim…
