So my question is… what’s your excuse for not having an iPod touch API for third party software, Apple?

Better yet, where the hell are the apps already on the iPhone? Although, if there was an API, that would take care of itself.
I can’t buy this thing. Too small to store a lot of video, so I can’t think of it as the ultimate video iPod. And, it doesn’t have the openness and/or applications so I can think of it as a PDA. I have a 30 GB video iPod already. I don’t have a compelling reason to change.
Having used the phone for a while now, I can say that it’s a MUCH better video player than the iPod video is. If that kind of content’s important to you, you may want to consider the touch.
The nice thing about the way videos are handled on the iPhone is that the device offers you the ability to delete files once you’re done watching them. Better than that, it finally handles the played count the way I expected the video to work. The upshot is that I don’t need to carry around a large amount of video podcasts on the phone, since I plug it in to recharge & reload nightly.
I’m either case, having the choice is nice. I’ve been wanting a much larger hard drive based iPod for years now. I probably won’t get one, but I’ve said that before…

They need a link cable so you can link the high capacity iPods to the wide screen iPods. Sure, you wind up hauling a lot of stuff around, but you could watch a LOT of video (until the old iPod ran out of battery).
I think podcasting has taken over as my favorite form of entertainment, so I don’t really need as much space for music these days. I watch quite a few video podcasts, but I only store enough to run down my battery. At that point, I recharge & reload.
